                                                                                        Hidden Within

“Look! The beast passed this way,” the scrawny guide, no more than four feet nothing, shouted. It was easy to hear the despair emanating from his voice.

Countless nights had passed since his last chance to sleep. The beast was taunting the group, and to be clearer, it was toying with everything they knew to be normal during the Great Hunt.

“How can this be,” Carson whispered while scratching the top of his head. “The tracks just stop at the cliff’s base. Impossible!”  He leaned over and placed his callous covered hand at the center of the deep impression that the beast’s paw had left behind.  “This one is a big one, boys,” he shouted as he looked straight up to judge the height of their climb. “Best be ready for anything, gentlemen. Take it slow, and watch your footing.”

“Aye, aye,” the group of 14 well built men and one small female Elf responded.

From high atop the cliff, the beast looked down, and while laughing evilly within, she thought, “They are closing in on me. Which morsel should I taste first?”  With a perfectly sharpened claw, Sarea flicked a boulder. “Let’s see how they deal with this pebble,” she scoffed.
Amber, seeing the boulder’s path, determined with her keen Elvin instinct that Carson was in danger, and took action. With speed uncanny to her race of midget elves, she scaled the cliff, in Carson’s direction, shouting in native tongue, “Paromay es te luvaso!” meaning, move your sorry backside.”

The boulder narrowly missed Carson’s thick scull as she snatched him from beneath its path. The man below, unable to speak the Elvin language failed to comprehend Amber’s cry.  The boulder met Morlack’s face with a tremendous force, crushing his scull and dislodging his powerful grip. The entire fall was unknown or felt, but despite this lack of knowledge to his senses, he ended up flattened below with a bone crushing splat.

Carson found Amber’s eyes, then said, “Why did you do that I had everything under control!”

“Yea right, I’m always saving your sorry little butt,” Amber said in disgust.

“Just climb okay, climb!”

The beast peered over the edge of the cliff, staring at Carson with black eyes that could penetrate the soul of any mortal. Carson shuddered, despite his immortality, and froze. He watched as the beast slowly moved away from the edge of the cliff. Slowly Carson shook his head and after a series of moments passed, his trance came to an end.

The group began to climb again. When the party crested to the top of the cliff there was a woman sitting under a tree. “Don’t hurt me," was the first and only thing she cried. Her shriek was filled with such despair that each member of the group felt the chill.

She was frail, brittle if you will, and her snow white hair moved within the breeze. She appeared tortured and as the group approached, the woman’s  skin started to move, slow at first, but more violently as time passed. It appeared as if some kind of creature, perhaps worms, lived beneath the skin's surface. The woman’s eyes slowly transitioned from a soft green, to a fiery red. It was as if the fire burned within them and as the intensity grew, the woman's skin turned black.
This was not a woman. This was something else. She was changing into some sort of creature. Eventually her transition was complete and  in her place stood a winged demon with crimson horns and stood in place on four massive paws. Snakes protruded from its cat-like body from just behind its neck.
"What wickedness is this?" Carson shouted as he unsheathed his blade.
Amber lifted her right hand. A white sphere appeared in the palm. "Shall we ask questions later? I think now is not the time."
The men were paralyzed with fear...

The demon let out a mighty roar then the snakes spit out venom towards the bewildered group. Amber was the first to react; she threw the white sphere towards Sarea which protected them from the poison...

Carson, knowing Amber's ability to forsee events and understanding the nature of her spell, reacted by calling forth the power harnessed within his blade.

The rest of the group was nothing more than blades for hire, not qualified to hunt demons. The weapons they carried were not of a magical nature, like Carson's. The time to run, was now!...

Flames roared from the demons mouth. Warming the group's cold bodies. The red inside the demons eyes intensified as the demon glared into Carson's eyes with such fury and hate that even the Devil would have had doubts about making it out in one peace, let alone God himself.

Carson became dazed as the beast stood tall, like a grizzly bear ready to finish off its prey while Amber released yet another sphere. It soured into the sky and burst into white snow-like particles. The particles whirled around the beast. Carson snapped out of it as he realized that the effect was buying him time to make his one move. It was now up to him. The lives of his friends, in his palms.

Carson leaped into the air with his swoard out like a night. Time slowed as carson screamed. He jamed his swored into the heart of the monster, with such force that the Devil which created the beast could feel it, piercing the heart. The monster melted all about Carson's sword as it fell to the floor of the plateau, high above the rest of the world, in exhaustion and knocked out. A white light began to expand from...

...Amber's hand yet again. Knowing that her power was strong enough to finish the beast, she delivered a mighty blow. The spell took the form of a single bolt of lightning and with the vengeance of Heaven, she released its fury. Hitting her target, the pleasure of the kill consumed her, causing weakness. She had summond too much power and as a result, she fell to her knees and toppled over.

Amber's spell had failed to be contained to just her enemy. Carson had been hit in the chest. As Amber's eyes closed she saw her love fall. It was this love for Carson that was her only hope, and as she faded farther into unconsciousness , her mind feared that she had killed him. For only he could bring her back to her true form.

All the members of the excursion had been frozen with fear. There was nothing they could do. They looked at Carson as his; seemingly, lifeless body lay there on the ground.

I felt to be an eternity before Amber awoke. The group watched from bended knee as Amber pulled herself toward Carson's motionless figure. Tears of despair fell earthward and onto Carson's blade as she serched for a pulse. It was faint and growing weaker by the second. She was about to loose her last hope at finding her true form.

But, the desperation of her mood triggered something amazing and an event was about to take place that she or even Carson, for that matter, would be unable to explain. The light within Carson's magical sword began to grow. A slow glimmer at first, but intensified with every tear drop that blessed its surface. Carson's chest began to fill with air and his pulse strengthened.

That was the last thing Amber saw as her exhaustion took over. She slid into unconsciousness beside the man that she knew she loved. Only time would tell whether she would ever have the chance to actually reveal or act upon her feelings fro this man. For now, they would remain, unknown, no matter how badly she wanted to tell him. She would needed to rid herself of the beast living within before she could explore a life with Carson.

It would be three days before Amber's eyes would awaken to see the blue of Tangarea's skies. Carson had ordered tents pitched atop the plateau and the body of the slain creature to be thrown from the top of the cliff.

Amber's condition had caused great concern and Carson had sent four men back to town to fetch a healer. It wasn't until the next morning that a short, fat, chubby cheeked gnome arrived. It didn't take long for Magloson to determine Amber's state and went to work, tending to her around the clock.

As Amber emerged from her tent, she stretched, her eyes finding a wispy formation of clouds. Slowly she turned to find her secret love, but he was nowhere to be found. Suddenly, she remembered how weak he had been.

Calling out to the group as they sat around the fire, she said, "Where is Carson. Is he alive?"

"Yes, Princess," the tallest of the group responded. He stood from the fire and hurried to a position of respect, kneeling in front of Amber. "The Colgarian Prince said to inform you that he would be back by sundown if you were to awaken. He has gone for reinforcements. He believes that the beast is not truly dead and our encounter with the Kamandan was merely a ruse to throw us off its tracks. What are your orders, Princess?"

Amber thought a moment, then responded with a wave of her hand, saying, "Nothing for now, Bestone, nothing for now. We will wait until the Colgarian Prince returns. Have the men ready our lunch. I'm hungry. Ohhhh, and Bestone, do not ever stand by and watch a fight again. We are here to capture this demon and die trying if necessary. Do not show cowardice again or I shall wield magic like you have never seen before. This won't be a pleasureful experience, I assure you."

Bestone swallowed hard. "Yes, Princess. I will personally see to it that the men do not fail you again." Bowing his head, he added, "Will that be all, Your Grace?"

"Yes, Bestone, that will be all!" Sensing that she may have overdone it a bit with her threat, Amber put the top of her tiny-little Elven hand on top of Bestone's bald head. She pushed it back until she found his blue eyes and rugged mustache.

"I know you are scared, Bestone, but this beast has taken something special from me. If you wish, I will allow you and the men to return to Jarestin. You can tell my father that I have given you your freedom to choice. It is now your decision to proceed further. What say you, Bestone?"

A brave smile appeared across Bestone's face, exposing a set of yellow teeth. After he grabbed the sheath of his blade, he responded, "Princess, It will be my honor to stay and give my life if necessary for you. I would gladly die with honor. But I cannot say that the men will feel the same way about dying for the Colgarian Prince. His magic is far weaker than yours."

Amber put her hand beneath Bestone's chin and felt the scruff of three days growth before responding. Her green eyes found his blue ones. "Yes, his magic is far weaker than mine, but I assure you, Bestone, the Prince is the key to finding that which I have lost. I want the men to serve him with equal measure. Please see to it that they show their respect, even if he is a Colgarian. Why don't you go back over to the fire and relax. Have the cook ready our lunch."

Amber watched as Bestone moved away. She thought to herself, "How will the men react if I were to ever confess my love for Carson?"

Turning toward the horizon atop the massive plateau, Amber solemnly stepped away from the camp to disengage her energies from that of the other men. The purples and oranges of the coming sunset began to soften the deep blue of the sky, and she slowly scanned the distance for any sign of Carson’s returning party, but no one was yet within her sight.

Closing her eyes, against the stark desert landscape and its fiery red and violet stone, she took a deep cleansing breath, turned her face into the breeze, and the slowly retreating sun, and focused her attention.

Amber quickly dropped into her meditation, having practiced for hours on end over the course of many years, it was like walking or riding a horse to her now… this trance. She began breathing rhythmically, waiting patiently as her brain-wave patterns changed, and her spirit began to connect with her mind and her heart, bringing all three into alignment. Then she began to rotate her Merkaba… first her upper tetrahedron, then her lower tetrahedron… in opposite directions, building speed quickly until both were spinning at beyond the speed of sound. The Merkaba created a vortex in her heart that connected her with all the consciousness of life around her… the earth, the plants, the animals and the water… with the air, with the atmosphere, and with the planets and galaxies… All of life was a part of her, and she a part of life. This was where her greatest power lay. The consciousness of the universe told her everything she needed to know.

Amber continued in silent meditation. As soon as the vortex was stabilized, she got down to business. First Carson—Amber searched through the infinite information available to her open heart now, and attempted to locate him.

“Ah, there you are,” she whispered to herself as she recognized his energetic signature. She quickly performed a physical scan of his body to ensure he was not suffering any further ill effects from her errant spell. Slowly, as though using a mental laser to see inside every part of his body from feet to crown, she then began scanning him energetically, to ensure the flow of his energies had not also become disrupted… the first symptom of physical distress is always in the energy field.

After scanning his energy flows and his radiating field, she signed with relief that all was well. Still, something niggled at the back of her brain… a question—the incident with Carson’s sword. Amber wondered for a tiny instant what sort of magic had come from his sword. She knew that kings of old often sent their spirits into their swords after death, imbuing them with all their power and prowess in battle. A mighty king’s sword was highly sought after, especially for a warlord intent on channeling that energy into their own quest for domination. This is why a king’s sword was often buried with him, sunken into the ocean or to the bottom of a deep lake after he died… to keep anyone else from seizing his power after death. Was there more to Carson’s sword than she had originally thought? Still, she had never heard of a king’s sword possessing magical powers. One thing was for sure… Carson was holding out on her, but why, she didn’t know.

Amber did not have the time to pursue thoughts of it further. There was a far greater task at hand than satisfying her curiosity in that moment. While still connected to the All-That-Is, spinning her vortex, Amber turned all her attention on the object of their quest…

...and it took only moments to locate. It was a dark energy on this plain of existence, several days travel down the backside of the plateau. The good news was that the evil was now resting in a stationary position... waiting for her. She could sense that it was watching for her presence on this plain and this created concern. She withdrew quickly, before she could be detected. Now, she had the information they needed to continue the hunt. The rest would hopefully reveal itself when the moment unfolded.

Taking several deep breaths, Amber fully withdrew from her meditative state. She opened her eyes, feeling more refreshed for the journey. She returned to the campsite to await the arrival of the man who was far more important, and possibly dangerous, than even he knew... Carson!

Eventually, Carson appeared in the distance with the reinforcements. Amber stood up, ready to go and waited for Carson, but something wasn't right. A sudden nausia overtook her, followed by a flashing pain in her head. She did not see the coinciding flash of lightening in the distant sky. Clouds were quickly building, and these clouds weren't normal. They were chasing Carson's group toward the base of the plateau. They were heavy and oily looking, with a definate green tinge to them. Sooner than what would normally be possible, the entire sky was filled with these sickly thunder-heads. Amber could only watch in disbelief and horror as yet another bolt of lightenig flashed across the sky.

Amber had a thought, "I need to protect him! He needs to be spared this terror."

She began to gather energy from all around her, forming a spear of pure light that rested in the palm of her right hand. When it had finished forming, she murmmured a fervent elvish prayer. With an almighty heave, she flung the spear directly into the clouds, hoping to disipate the would be rain, but a surprise lurked within the grayness.

The resulting boom shook the earth beneath her feet, pulling her down with it. What happened next was both unexpected and dreadful. As though the spell had punched a hole in the clouds, the rains came down in a great torrent. The rain was darker than the clouds that it decended from. As soon as the first drops hit the ground, she saw that there was something wrong. The ground sizzled and grasses burned where ever the deadly drops touched. A drop landed on Amber's unprotected forearm. Her flesh sizzled and Amber could feel the poison penetrating her natural defences.

Bestone, seeing Amber's reaction, quickly grabbed his Shield of Tangarea, lifted it above his head and ordered his men to do the same as he bolted across the plateau. Pulling Amber close, the poisonous droplet falling toward her head failed to hit its target.

Bestone's shield hissed as the acidic rain intensified, scorching the king's symbol which rested at its center. Slowly, he moved them away from the cliff's edge, and as he did, he noticed Carson and his band of reinforcements rushing toward the protection that the cliffs below the plateau would offer. Just as he had done, Carson's men looked for cover with armored protection lifted skyward. He could only hope there was a healer within the group, experienced enough to handle this kind of wickedness.

Erion had watched as Bestone rushed toward Amber. In all his life, he had never see anything like it before. The fury and evil that was pouring from the heavens was frightning, but he had promised Bestone that he would not let down thier Princess again. Despite his fear, he knew the he had to do something.
He ran towards the Princess with his shield raised above him to protect himself from the venom fallin upon the plateau.

As Erion ran, he imagined hiself as a savior, and thought internally that he now realized why he was meant to go on this mission. Reaching the couple,he joined his shield with Bestone's to give Amber more protection.

Bestone looked at him, and Erion could see the concern in his commander's eyes. "I can help," Erion shouted,"We need to find better shelter, I don't know how long we'll be able to sustain this evil. Your sheild is already failing."

She closed in on them, keeping her eye focused only on Carson, as if she could see his soul, and she wanted it..., the rest were no game for her, not even a slight distraction, she laughed at the very thought of it..., their powers were like a breeze against her immortal destruction, she could release. It would have been so easy to just take what she wanted, but not with him, not Carson, he was different. He could feel it now, something about him was raging inside, a power he never knew he had, waiting to be unleashed, then unstoppable. And so she would be once she ripped it from his veins...
she entreated a step closer, taunting them, fire burning in her eyes, Carson felt a strange draw towards her, as he stepped forward...Amber cried out as she jumped in front of Carson sphere in hand, ready to defend him to the death....if only she knew.................
